1/10/2012 - Lateral B Rd Bin Fire

 

Units from YCFD #5 arrived to find a very large bin pile on fire; the fire was burning in the middle of the pile. There were approximately 300-400 bins on fire at this time. The fire had been started on the out side of the stack and burned inward. The pile turned out to have 14,000 bins and had no fire breaks. The fire was contained and fire dept personnel used two Hyster forklifts to move the bins to gain access and extinguish the fire. The fire was human caused and started along the East side of the bins. The bin pile was valued at $560,000 with a loss of $16,000. For any questions, contact Deputy Chief Frazier.

1/4/2011 - Memorial Information: Retired Fire Chief James (Jim) Stanton

 

Chief Stanton passed away on December 29, 2011.The memorial service for Fire Chief James (Jim) Stanton (Ret.) will be held on Thursday, January 12th, 2012, 10:00 a.m. at the Grace Brethren Church in Sunnyside. The address for the service is 703 E. Franklin Avenue, Sunnyside, WA. A reception luncheon will follow after the graveside services at the Grace Brethren Church.

 

Chief Stanton dedicated 33 years of service to the City of Sunnyside Fire Department. He was also a volunteer firefighter with Yakima County Fire District #5 for a total of 35 years. He retired from the Sunnyside Fire Department in December of 2004.
 
The Stanton family request in lieu of flowers that donations may be made to Lower Valley Hospice or the Sunnyside Volunteer Firefighters Association.
 
Departments are asked to please RSVP to Battalion Chief Harris if they are planning on having an apparatus in the funeral procession.

12/29/2011 - Yakima County Department of EMS

 

With the addition of a new computer monitored/ controlled CPR manikin, what better way to break it in than challenge all local EMS and healthcare providers to a contest.

 

Teams of 3 will compete for cash and prizes to be awarded at the 2012 Yakima County EMS Week Awards Ceremony.

 

The rules are simple: Each team will have one chance to save our dummy by performing team oriented CPR which will be monitored and recorded by a computer (using AHA guidelines). Rate, depth, timing, the computer will deter-mine which team is the best in the County.

 

How do I enter? Put together a team of 3 providers. Attend one of our challenge sessions.

 

When is the challenge? Over the next several weeks we will be coordinating with local fire districts, hospitals and other agencies to host a date as well as establish specific dates and times to stop by our main station to compete in the event.

 

A copy of the schedule will be available on the YCDEMS website.

On Christmas Eve firefighters from Toppenish Station 9, Gamache Station 4, and Zillah Station 10 responded to a residential structure fire on Robbins Rd in Toppenish.

12/21/2011 - Cemetary Rd Fire

 

Crews from Sunnyside Station 13, Outlook Station 12, Grandview Station 14, and Zillah Station 10 worked late Wednesday evening to extinguish a residential structure fire on Cemetery Rd.

It is with great sorrow that we learned of the passing of a dear friend and dedicated member of our team, Don Growt. Don was a very active member with White Swan Station 1 serving as a Lieutenant up until his retirement on December 1st. After becoming very ill, he had chosen to move to Spokane to be with his family during his final days. At Don's request, there will be no services, but this spring his family will scatter his ashes in the area he enjoyed to hunt. The family also plans to attend the district's yearly banquet to receive Don's retirement plaque. Please keep Don and his family in your thoughts and prayers!

12/12/2011 - Horschel Rd - Structure Fire

Firefighters arrived on scene of a manufactured home with heavy smoke and fire visible. Crews were advised that the only occupant was out of the residence. The fire was extinguished but the home and all contents were a total loss. The home owner was asleep at the time of the fire and was woke up do to the smoke and left the residence. The owner had suffered from smoke inhalation and was transported by ambulance to a Yakima hospital for treatment. According to family members, there were smoke detectors in the residence but it was unknown if they worked (none were sounding when fire dept arrived). The cause of the fire is under investigation.

12/1/2011 - Duty Weekend Firefighter Meeting

 

Just a reminder to all our YCFD5 firefighters, there will be a Weekend Duty Firefighter meeting on December the 5th at Toppenish Station 9 @ 1900hrs. We're hoping to get some new people in the program. So if you would like to be a part of this program, please make it to this meeting. The following is a list of the program's requirements.

(Numbers 5, 6, and 7 must be complete before you do your first weekend.)

1. Must be in good standing with the Fire District.
2. Have completed 3 years service with the Fire District.
3. Be EVIP certified.
4. Battalion Officers recommendation.
5. Sign waiver stating you have read and understand the Fire Districts Safety Policy manual.
6. Be signed off to operate S-1. (to include task book)
7. Sign waiver acknowledging Duty Weekend Guideline descriptions. (this is addition to fire fighters regular job description)
8. Be a full combat / interior fire fighter. (scba)

11/16/2011 - Station 7/8 Update

 

On October 4, 2011 the Board of Fire Commissioners of Fire District 5 accepted a recommendation from TCA Architecture to award the bid for the Station 7 & 8 building to contractor Booth & Sons Construction Inc. of Kennewick, Wa. for the amount of $825,250.00 plus WSST. November 7 was designated as the official start date with substantial completion on or before 245 calendar days thereafter or July 5, 2012.

The YCFD5 Dozer Team needs your help! The team created a video to compete in a nationwide contest to win a new Caterpillar Truck. The team is hoping to win this new truck because their trucks are getting very old and worn with an average of a million miles each!  If the team wins, they plan to utilize the Caterpillar CT660 vocational truck to pull the lowboy trailer and dozer to wildland fires all across our district. 9/9/2011 - Monastery Complex Fire


Four engines and a strike team leader from District 5 are working their third evening shift on the Monastery Complex Fire. The team was able to sleep well this afternoon as they prepared for another evening working on the line. Photos from the crew's first night on the fire are now online courtesy of FF Miller.

Crews returned last Wednesday from the Wishram 2 Fire on Highway 14. The crews came back very exhausted after working through the night to contain the fire by utilizing burning operations.

8/22/2011 - Firefighter Appreciation Dinner

 

Preparations are currently being made for our 2011 Firefighter Appreciation Dinners. August 24th at 6pm we will be celebrating the service of our Battalion 4 firefighters with a Spaghetti Dinner served at the Sunnyside Community Center. The community center is located at 1521 South 1st Street. Bring the family and will see you there!

Firefighters from Yakima County Fire District #5 will be at "Summer Jam", the White Swan National Night Out on Wednesday August 10th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

6/29/2011 - Chief Hadaller LODD

It is with a heavy heart that the Volunteers of Lewis County Fire District 3 announce the death of Fire Chief Matt Hadaller.


Chief Hadaller suffered a yet undetermined medical problem at his home while on-duty, on-call, on June 27th.  He was transported by Fire District 3 ambulance to Morton General Hospital, while in route to the hospital Matt suffered a cardiac arrest.  Fire District 3 personnel and Morton General Hospital's Emergency Department staff made a valiant effort to revive him, but sadly were unsuccessful.

Chief Hadaller was 47 years old and has served his entire 20 years in the fire service with Lewis County Fire District 3 the last seven and a half years as Fire Chief. 


Services are being scheduled for Saturday July 2, 2011, at the Mossyrock High School Football field, where Matt had played quarter back for the Vikings' football team.  The time for the service will be announced as soon as it is available as well as information for agencies wishing to participate.


Assistant Chief Doug Fosburg has been appointed Interim Chief effective 12:00 today, by the Fire District 3 Board of Fire Commissioners.

 

6/15/2011 - Rattlesnake Ridge Fire

 

Firefighters from YCFD5 and the Upper Valley responded to a fire on Rattlesnake Ridge that started off Plath Road in Parker. The fire that had threatened several residences was contained at an estimated 1500 acres after using utilizing a combination of dozers, burning crews, and fire engines.

6/8/2011 - Treaty Days Parade

 

On June 8th Captain Greg Babcock, Firefighter Danielle Aguilar, Firefighter Steven Hoptowit, and Firefighter/Mechanic Carroll Frank participated in the Treaty Day's Parade. After all was said and done, they placed 2nd in the group division. Thanks for everyone who helped serve our community and represent the district.

5/21/2011 - Dozer Operator Training

 

Last weekend, several members of the Special Operations Dozer Team participated in the annual heavy equipment refresher training. During the class, members were able to brush up on their equipment familiarization and sharpen their wildland firefighting tactics while creating a fire breaks to protect property from potentially hazardous fuels.

On Sunday, Yakima County EMS Office hosted the 2011 EMS Awards Ceremony at the Capital Theatre in Yakima.

 

During the Awards Ceremony, Yakima County MPD Dr. Acosta, YCFD5 Deputy Chief Walker, and YCFD5 Commissioners Lunning and Charvet presented Dispatcher Bob Clark with the 2011 Yakima County EMS Dispatcher of the Year. Congratulations Bob on a job well done!

3/21/2011 - Firefighter Wayne Burton

 

With 24 years of dedicated service, Station 5 Firefighter Wayne Burton passed away on Monday March 21st. When the call went out, you could always count of Wayne to be at the station and ready to go. During his time with the district, Wayne grew to become a very dedicated firefighter, driver, and pump operator.


On Tuesday March 29th there will be a viewing from 1000-1200 at Shaw and Sons Funeral Home in Yakima followed by a burial service at Terrace Heights Cemetery. Afterwards, everybody is invited to Parker Station 5 for a potluck.


2/14/2011 - 2011 Firefighter Stair Climb


Four firefighters from Yakima County Fire District #5 will be participating in the 20th annual Scott Firefighter Stair Climb in Seattle, WA on March 6th. This event takes place at the Columbia Center Tower and is the world's largest firefighter competition with over 1500 firefighters competing from across the world. Normally climbing 69 floors to the top would be a challenge in itself, but firefighters then wear their protective gear and breathing compressed air until they reach the tower's observation deck. 2/4/2011 - Assistance to Firefighter's Grant


Yakima County Fire District #5 was awarded a $66,897.00 grant from FEMA's 2010 Assistance to Firefighter's Grant. The grant will be used to replace all our current 1 1/2 hose with new 1 3/4 hose as well as new 1 3/4 and 2 1/2 nozzles. Way to go Captain Dave Martin and thanks for the great work on the grant!!!

1/19/2011 - Sun Country Feed Store Structure Fire

 

YCFD#5 was dispatched to commercial structure. Units arrived to find moderate to heavy smoke conditions in the attic area. There was minimal damage to the contents of the building.  Most of the damage was structural. Media Release
